Mechanical water pump
Mechanical coolant pumps can either simply activate the circulation of the fluid, or they can also perform a multifunctional role.
Multiple devices can be integrated, for example, thermostatic valves and pressure limiting valves, which are required to support other units or for structural assistance of the drive unit.
No closed-loop control is available in conventional mechanical coolant pumps. It’s driven by the auxiliary or synchronous belt and co-rotate continuously as soon as the engine is running. Their flow rate is not variable in terms of output and cannot be switched off when it is not required.
Switchable water pump
Coolant pumps of latest generation engines are required to shorten the heating-up phase in order to reduce CO2 emissions.
Advantages
Switchable or variable water pumps are also mechanical water pumps driven by a synchronous or auxiliary belt. Depending on the model, the pump performance can be adjusted by a vacuum actuator, electromagnetic actuator or by an electromagnetic clutch on the pulley.
- Similar set up to the classic water pump
- Lower emission levels during warming up phase - catalytic converter works earlier
- Slightly lower fuel consumption
Electric water pump
More and more engines will be equipped with electric water pump solutions, either as the main pump or an additional water pump. On hybrid cars the electric water pump also cools the High Voltage Inverter.
Advantages
- Can be installed anywhere in the engine bay (maximum flexibility)
- Improved fuel efficiency as the electric pump will only be active when needed
- Long service life
- Pump speed can be regulated independently of the engine speed; especially important for cars with turbo units that need to be cooled down after engine stops
- Lower emission levels during warming up phase –catalytic converter works earlier
SKF aquamax concept
The SKF AquaMax water pump provides superior cooling flow over a standard water pump.
Advantages
On modern turbo engines a perfect flow is most important to safeguard sufficient cooling capacity when the engine has to operate under severe conditions like towing a trailer on mountain roads. Under these conditions the engine has to deliver a high torque during a longer period and cooling capacity is crucial.
- Similar set up to the classic water pump
- Lower emission levels during warming up phase - catalytic converter works earlier
- Slightly lower fuel consumption
The benefits
- Optimum cooling efficiency
- Strong focus on sustainability: reduced fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions
